Don Box Cries Ruby For Influentials #
(Eye shake, cartoon duck honk.) So he’s stepped up from wanting a language for his kids to wanting it for Microsoft at large. While speaking at the Competitive Influentials conference, Don Box is paraphrased as: if he could change one thing at MSFT, it would be that Ruby would become the language of choice.
If I could change one thing about my pet spider Daniel, it would be that Ruby became his language of choice. Check back a year from now and we’ll see who’s made more progress.

Hiroki Asakawa has been developing Ruby.NET supported by IPA ’s FY2004 Exploratory Software Project for Youth. It ain’t opensourced yet. The document is here: The Development of Ruby.NET Compiler (japanese).

I agree that hoping Ruby becomes the “language of choice” within MS is fruitless. C# is their baby. That being said, what we can hope for is that corporations like Sun, IBM and MS decide to pick an agile language of choice to supplement their static money makers. Or maybe I’m delusional.

Tim Bray (one of XML ’s inventors, works for Sun these days) recently agitated for Sun to get out of doing just the boring stuff (like Java) and back into some riskier world-changing stuff. Stuff that’s not boring, basically. Under the “What’s not boring?” section, one listed item is dynamic languages.
So I’d bet on Sun to take up Ruby before MS, but either are probably years away anyway …

I think the current growth is already hard to handle (too little content for such a horde of newbies and “programmers”); I don’t want to see things get even worse.

notice the Coyote project at sun Wich aims to give first class support to dynamic languages for the jvm in netbeans.
On the other side, don’t forget that when microsoft announced MSH , their next generation CLI shell, there was a quote like “we want it to be as powerful as perl or ruby”. megacorporation guys are belong to us.

Gab, some of us (obviously in minority) don’t actually want to own megacorporations.
I’m not sure I want everybody and their dogs to use Ruby, either.

The world would be a much nicer place if everybody and their dog (and cat) used Ruby. My cat wants to start a home automation project aimed at keeping her food bowl full. I’ve noticed her nudging the pickaxe II book lately.

whocares, you can’t stop Ruby from being adopted in the wider world. It’s acquired critical mass. You’d be well advised to accept that people you don’t like (?) are going to use it, and just enjoy it for yourself without regard to what others may do. Or else you’ll end up a bitter old being, using some functional language no one’s every heard of and being proud of it. Which would be fine, if that’s what you really want out of life.
