Me & the Thirsty Cups at SXSW in March, Then RailsConf in June #

by why in cult

The Orthley Children and Their Computer

Great sobs of clapter to Hugh Forrest, Justin Bankston and also Tom Lockney (who told them fables of FOSCON) for giving us a slender green spotlight at SXSW. Well-mannered and full-featured, each of them.

And we’re so honored to be tagging along at RailsConf. A performance of all possible facial stunts to David Double-H and Chad Singular-F for giving us a lifetime supply of rafts, plenty to ease the trip we’ll make from our home nation of the Dominican Republic. These are the things humans will do in the name of bedevilment.

But most of all: Oliver, Din, Leonie and Trudy. Those dishes and their incurable heatstroke. I love them! But, to bring this back to a more serious note, might I add: I love them.

If this is too much self-promotion, please just leave (in all caps) BLOCKADE as your message in the comments. I will respond in kind with an italicized flavor of wood finish doubling as an insult.

Great news. It’s a shame I won’t be there to witness this. Webcast? Someone needs to record the music at least. :)

Have a lot of fun!

Now, if only I can figure out how to make it back to Austin to see it…

Looking forward to seeing the show at RailsConf. Please be rocking on!

I somehow thought that Why was from Canada… Maybe I picked that up in the Poignant Guide? Maybe I just dreamt it.

Yesterday, OSCON , tomorrow, SXSW , the day after RailsConf, and somewhere around Thursday or so… THE WORLD !

I heard why is from Russia.

Matt: Me too.

Also don’t forget BarCamp Austin which is going on all day March 11th. I know a lot of SXSW folks plan to attend the BarCamp festivities as well. Good times will be had.

As why’s evil twin, I feel obligated to poke a hole in his cloak of secrecy.

He is from Utah. The resemblance with Donny Osmond is a clear giveaway.

said on 12 Feb 2006 at 10:57

All rumorings aside, he is from Alberta. I’m in Red Deer and I’ve met him a few times on campus. He must work at the library because he’s got a nametag and he pushes a cart of books around.

Doppelgangers? I wonder if the _why that shows up to SXSW will be the _why from OSCON .

Utah +1

why not: Urethane (kless rascal.)

Does anyone know anything about SXSW attendees? I mean can I expect twenty folks in the audience to have their laptops open with wifi running? I really need at least sixteen for sure.

Word will get out, and methinks you’ll have no problem finding people who want to take part in the madness. I think it might have been at SXSW that the lead Flaming Lips man (Wayne Coyne?) got 40 people standing in a parking lot with 40 boomboxes and 40 unique cassettes, as he conducted a live polyphonic mix as they turned volume knobs up and down in concert.

I thought we had determined that there is a trinity of _whys: One on each coast of the US and another that shuttles between the Dominican Republic and various places in Canada. Soon franchises will pop up all over the world; just avoid those imitators who refer to themselves as who_the_hell_knows.

_why: SXSW is not generally considered a geekfest; it’s not prime laptop habitat. However, once it gets out that you’ll be playing there plenty of Rubyfolk will likely attend your performance thus supplying the requisite laptops… Though you need to be prepared for them to be Books of Power or Books of i or maybe even a few Books of Mac (Rubyfolk seem to prefer Apples).

I smell Ruby on Rafts…

You’re all working with incomplete information. Factually, _why does have relatives in Utah, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find him there. I won’t comment on the Alberta bit.

Anyway, as a fellow pseudonym, I think that’s quite enough hole-poking for to-day.

Will people report on what was spoken about? Is that socially unacceptable to give an overview of something people paid to see? Hmmm… never really thought about that before.

Matt: hopefully the world hasn’t come to that yet.

said on 13 Feb 2006 at 13:03

MenTaLguY: I’m sure there are bills winding their way through Congress dealing with this issue.

said on 13 Feb 2006 at 18:49

I will be there with my laptop. Hopefully it will work better than FOSCON where I couldn’t connect to the DRb playground.

I think there should be movies of talks just like there were movies of the talks given at the RubyConf which was alos a paid event.

The over-commercialization of rails related events leaves a bad taste in my mouth.. If everything of any value in the Rails world has to have a price (high most of the times), the nature of the community maybe be altered irrevocably.

It will become too corporate, too fast.

I’m with ya on that. Really, I’d like to hit high schools.

said on 14 Feb 2006 at 12:41

Btw, where’s that picture of a horse you told Justin I’d be receiving? I’ve had a nice little spot cleared on my wall for months now!

said on 14 Feb 2006 at 12:49

SXSW provides free audio recordings (aka PODCASTS h0rk!) of many panels.

said on 14 Feb 2006 at 23:19

I work for SXSW , and Tom told me I shouldn’t miss this show, no matter how busy I am. I will do my besteses.

Props to Justin and Tom for getting _why invited to SXSW , and mals for them not telling me they’d done so!

_why, I have a strong, strong feeling that your SXSW “showcase” will be SRO .

said on 15 Feb 2006 at 16:57

If the room is full, I will invite the people outside to come sit on my lap.

Also, if only three people show up, they will all be invited to come, sit on my lap.

I live directly across the street from the convention center in AusTX, but alas, am too poor to attend such paid presentations. If there is any way to view or witness this from 0.05 miles away, I shall do so.
