Ruby Turns Twelve #

by why in cult

...while the rest of us continue to insist upon living out our youth through her.

I’d personally like to encourage Matz to take the day off, relax, maybe make a few appearances for the public’s benefit, accept their accolades and exhale with contentment. Today, we celebrate twelve years since an idea popped into that man’s head.

I wonder what I was doing that day. That was right around the time I made that handheld TV jammer and blocked out the closed-circuit high school news program in my English class. Nobody really cared. Definitely not worth talking about twelve years later.

Interesting thought… “what were you doing twelve years ago?”

I (along with my three partners) had just finished up WordStar for Windows 2.0, which promptly flopped (except in the UK).

I was busy adjusting MAC addresses on my network card and debugging the corresponding 1.3.38 linux kernel networking function. Man, C sure was a lot harder in those days! Glad to be in a more fun language, finally.

I was recreating a car accident using lights, a windshield and x-rays of my head. Incidentally, I was also trying to negotiate with One Eyed Burt to release my car.

In my second year of my BTEC National Diploma in Computer Studies, learning Cobol of all things.

Curt, wordstar rings a bell with me. What platforms did you release it on? At the time I had a program called Wordsworth on the Amiga (by the people who went on to produce some of the versions of Microsoft Money; Digita)

Getting the crap kicked out of me during the middle of a show at Brownie’s in NYC . There had been a terrible snowstorm that day and I remember spitting blood into a snowbank.

Not sure what I was doing on the 24th, but I remember a few days later pretty well. My daughter was born on the 28th. :)

Teaching myself C in my parents’ basement (from a surprisingly good BBS tutorial). Otherwise, ignoring high school as much as possible.

Cilibrar: I think ‘93 was still in the pre-1.0 days, as I remember popping my Linux cherry with .99.something a year or so later. (From a stack of floppies in a brown paper bag that was being passed around the lunch room… awesome.)

How old was Matz when he created Ruby?
