Conf Residue #
When you retire this evening, why not soothe yourself to sleep with the sounds of David Alan Black explaining the food situation at RubyConf? In a few weeks, you’ll be out the minute he hits stride with the touching story about the catering staff who actually bypassed the butter for olive oil. And all because Ezra Zygmuntowicz is passing out audio files of Ruby Conference V, microphones wielded by the delicate hands of Chad Fowler and Jim Freeze.
Complement your listening with a number of visual diversions, such as:
- The Facebook. I prefer the tarpit version. Your personal likes and needs may predispose you toward this as well. A little trick: Paste over 100 random URLs onto any wiki page and then go back to the link above and it should materialize. Now, best foot forward, let’s make the tarpit better than the real Ruby wiki!!
- Kevin Clark is taking notes on his blog. Alot of notes, ho boy. Even stuff like Response: Inaudible! Very realistic, Kevin.
- Here’s that MouseHole script Francis was askin for.
And, I don’t know, there’s a Flickr group somewhere but I figured I should leave something for you guys to do. No one ever helps out around here.

is that Ryan Davis or Salvadore Dali in the facebook?
Daniel Berger
“Daid”? :-P
Bye {||}. I <3 you
Mentioned in the YARV talk—{||} is going away.

NOOOOOOO Oooooooooooooooooo!!! Please matz, we LOVE the goalposts!
James Edward Gray II
I saw { | ... | ... } == → ( ... ) { ... }. I don’t think it’s going away.

When (...){...} was mentioned, ko1 said he thought it was ugly, and everyone cheered.
Dan
foos.each->foo {puts foo} foos.each->(foo){puts foo}
It will be more bearable if the parenthesis are optional, but it still sucks.

Can anyone give us the straight scoop?
Is {|..|} being eliminated or not?
If so then it calls for a major food fight at RubyConf.
why
I just can’t get over how people are working just as hard to keep spam out of the tarpit as they are on the real deal. Enough, let the tar have its own home, painstakers worldwide.

check out CVS HEAD . 1.9 has these features. Try it out. I would rather have something like \ used but I don’t think it is replacing {||} syntax. Matz explained it as more of an alternative expression that is more like an annon. function, not just a small closure or a simple block. This makes sense for cases where one would use default args. I am undecided on my opinion of the situation.
Ezra Zygmuntowicz
Guys here is an answer to whether the {||...} notation is going away or not. It is not going anywhere. I asked Matz the questions straight up and he asnwered back in August. Here is the quote from ruby-talk
In message “Re: ruby-dev summary 26468-26661” on Fri, 5 Aug 2005 10:09:55 +0900, Ezra Zygmuntowicz writes:
|I think one of the first things that attracted me to ruby is the {| |x|...} syntax. So please leave my happy little blocks alone. Or at |least leave them as an option.
Don’t worry. The block syntax will not be changed. Never.

Thanks for that blog Ezra, I’m downloading the audio files now at a very nice speed. For those who haven’t visited it yet: though I do like the open ogg format, I recommend the mp3 files because they are smaller and can of course be used on all portable music devices.
Ezra
your all very welcome. the ruby comminuty as a whole has helped me ou so much that this blog is the least I could do.
