Timing release schedules to maximize publicity
Two or three times each year, Macintosh enthusiasts go nuts over Apple’s new product launches, and the company rides a wave of publicity from the resulting media attention. Open source projects would do well to study how Apple orchestrates this, because publicity is the key to attracting new users—and new users are the lifeblood of the development model.

So, how about the release of Ruby 1.8.4 on OSCON?
The problem is PR. Ruby 1.8 line is in stable term completely, thus it seems to me that nobel features won’t be included. To attract, I have no choice but to release the one has more features, in a word, Ruby 1.9 line.
It might be not glad from a developer’s viewpoint.

Interesting news. Any ideas why it might not be good for developers? Is it referring to a possibly incomplete release or just that Matsumoto-ue will bring out a whip and make the developers unhappy? :)

well, I think because 1.9 will introduce some core differences, forcing people to carefully handle an upgrade.
I’d like to see an 1.8.4 in june anyway, since I think a maintenance release should be done often. Maybe to get attention we can add some new fun library.. any suggestion?

Ah, indeed. I was thinking of the core developers. Maybe Koichi-san will come up with a release of YARV for the occasion (0.2 is pretty nice).

Ruby itself doesn’t need to be the ‘headliner’ – why not RubyGem and RubyOnRails 1.0 releases then?
